Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—their meaning and what determines your placement.

Rate class is how carriers tier pricing. Names shift a bit between companies, but the order stays: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then ratings for above-standard risk. Tobacco users get their own higher-priced tier.

What underwriters look at

BMI, vital signs, lipids, early-age cardiac or cancer in the family, MVR, meds, work and leisure, and smoking or nicotine. Preferred Plus demands clean marks on most; Preferred bends slightly; Standard Plus and Standard tolerate managed issues like controlled high BP.

How to use the quote tool

Health self-rating: Excellent = Preferred Plus, Very good = Preferred, Good = Standard Plus, Average = Standard. Quotes use your choice; the carrier sets the final class later. Unsure? Get quotes for two classes, compare, then apply. Overstating health does not reduce the final rate—just skews the estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency helps match carriers with relaxed rules for your situation—often more important than the advertised rate.
